Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 pound pork sausage, casing removed
- 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1/2 teaspoon sugar
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese, plus more for serving
- Fresh basil leaves, for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until it becomes translucent, about 5 minutes.
- Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute, stirring frequently to prevent burning.
- Add the pork sausage to the skillet. Use a wooden spoon to break it up into small pieces as it cooks. Cook until browned and cooked through, about 8-10 minutes.
- Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, thyme, and sugar. Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low.
- Cover the skillet and let the ragù simmer gently for about 1 hour, stirring occasionally. Adjust the heat as necessary to maintain a gentle simmer.
- Season the ragù with salt and pepper to taste. Stir in the 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese just before serving. This adds a rich flavor and helps thicken the sauce slightly.
- Serve the Pork Sausage Ragù over cooked pasta of your choice. Top with additional Parmesan cheese and fresh basil leaves, if desired.
