Ingredients

  • 1 pound fresh asparagus
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your grill to medium-high heat, about 375°F to 400°F. If you are using a charcoal grill, prepare your grill with enough coals to create medium-high heat on one half of the grill.
  2. Rinse the asparagus under running water and pat dry with paper towels. Drying them well will help them grill better and prevent steaming.
  3. Trim the woody ends from the asparagus by either snapping them off or cutting with a knife, about 1 to 2 inches from the base.
  4. In a large bowl, toss the asparagus with olive oil, salt, and pepper to ensure each piece is evenly coated.
  5. Place the asparagus spears in a single layer directly onto the preheated grill grates perpendicular to the bars to prevent them from falling through.
  6. Grill the asparagus for about 3 to 5 minutes, turning occasionally, until tender and slightly charred. Keep an eye on them to prevent burning. If they are charring too quickly, move them to a cooler part of the grill.
  7. Once grilled, remove the asparagus from the grill and transfer them to a serving plate.
  8. Drizzle the grilled asparagus with lemon juice and sprinkle with lemon zest and Parmesan cheese if using. Serve immediately.
