Ingredients

  • 12 ounces spaghetti
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • Freshly grated Parmesan cheese (for serving)
  • Fresh basil leaves (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

  1. Fill a large pot with water and add a generous pinch of salt. Bring the water to a boil over high heat.
  2. Once the water is boiling, add the spaghetti. Cook according to the package instructions until al dente, about 9-11 minutes.
  3. While the spaghetti is cooking, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat.
  4. Add the chopped onion to the saucepan and sauté until it’s soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.
  5. Add garlic to the saucepan and cook for another 1 minute until fragrant.
  6. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, salt, black pepper, sugar, and red pepper flakes (if using). Mix well.
  7. Add dried basil and oregano. Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  8. Drain the cooked spaghetti and add it directly into the sauce. Toss well to coat all the pasta with the sauce.
  9. Serve hot topped with freshly grated Parmesan cheese and garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired.
