Ingredients
- 12 ounces spaghetti
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- Freshly grated Parmesan cheese (for serving)
- Fresh basil leaves (for garnish, optional)
Instructions
- Fill a large pot with water and add a generous pinch of salt. Bring the water to a boil over high heat.
- Once the water is boiling, add the spaghetti. Cook according to the package instructions until al dente, about 9-11 minutes.
- While the spaghetti is cooking, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat.
- Add the chopped onion to the saucepan and sauté until it’s soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.
- Add garlic to the saucepan and cook for another 1 minute until fragrant.
- Stir in the crushed tomatoes, salt, black pepper, sugar, and red pepper flakes (if using). Mix well.
- Add dried basil and oregano. Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Drain the cooked spaghetti and add it directly into the sauce. Toss well to coat all the pasta with the sauce.
- Serve hot topped with freshly grated Parmesan cheese and garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired.
