Ingredients
- 12 oz penne pasta
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 4 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (adjust to taste)
- 1 (28 oz) can of crushed tomatoes
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1/4 cup fresh basil leaves, chopped
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional)
- Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Fill a large pot with water, add a pinch of salt, and bring it to a boil over high heat.
- Add the penne pasta to the boiling water and cook according to the package instructions until al dente, usually about 10-12 minutes.
- While the pasta is cooking, heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Add the minced garlic and red pepper flakes to the skillet and sauté until the garlic is golden and fragrant, about 1-2 minutes.
- Stir in the crushed tomatoes, sugar, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Bring to a simmer and let it cook for about 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
- Once the pasta is cooked, reserve 1/2 cup of the pasta water, then drain the pasta in a strainer.
- Add the cooked penne to the sauce in the skillet. Toss to coat the pasta thoroughly. If the sauce is too thick, add a bit of the reserved pasta water to reach your desired consistency.
- Stir in the chopped fresh basil and let cook for another minute.
- Serve hot, garnished with grated Parmesan cheese and fresh parsley, if desired.
