Ingredients
- 1 lb (80/20 lean-to-fat ratio) ground beef
- 1 tsp kosher salt
- 1 tsp black pepper
- 4 hamburger buns
- 4 slices American cheese
- 1 cup shredded iceberg lettuce
- 1 large tomato (sliced)
- 1/4 cup thinly sliced red onion
- 4 tbsp ketchup (optional)
- 4 tbsp yellow mustard (optional)
Instructions
- In mixing bowl, gently combine ground beef with salt and pepper. Divide into 4 equal portions (4 oz each). Form into 3/4-inch thick patties, making a slight indentation in the center with your thumb to prevent bulging during cooking.
- Preheat grill or skillet to medium-high heat (375°F). Lightly oil the cooking surface with neutral oil using a paper towel.
- Cook patties 3-4 minutes undisturbed until browned. Flip carefully with spatula. Cook 3 more minutes for medium (160°F internal temp). Add cheese slices during last minute to melt.
- While patties rest, toast buns cut-side down on cooking surface for 30-60 seconds until golden. Wrap in foil to keep warm.
- Spread condiments on bun bottoms. Add patty with cheese. Top with lettuce, tomato, and onion. Cap with bun top. Serve immediately.
