Ingredients

  • 1 lb (80/20 lean-to-fat ratio) ground beef
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 4 slices American cheese
  • 1 cup shredded iceberg lettuce
  • 1 large tomato (sliced)
  • 1/4 cup thinly sliced red onion
  • 4 tbsp ketchup (optional)
  • 4 tbsp yellow mustard (optional)

Instructions

  1. In mixing bowl, gently combine ground beef with salt and pepper. Divide into 4 equal portions (4 oz each). Form into 3/4-inch thick patties, making a slight indentation in the center with your thumb to prevent bulging during cooking.
  2. Preheat grill or skillet to medium-high heat (375°F). Lightly oil the cooking surface with neutral oil using a paper towel.
  3. Cook patties 3-4 minutes undisturbed until browned. Flip carefully with spatula. Cook 3 more minutes for medium (160°F internal temp). Add cheese slices during last minute to melt.
  4. While patties rest, toast buns cut-side down on cooking surface for 30-60 seconds until golden. Wrap in foil to keep warm.
  5. Spread condiments on bun bottoms. Add patty with cheese. Top with lettuce, tomato, and onion. Cap with bun top. Serve immediately.
