Ingredients

  • 2 cups cooked shredded chicken
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 8 corn tortillas
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil for frying
  • 1 cup shredded lettuce for garnish
  • 1/2 cup crumbled queso fresco for garnish
  • 1/2 cup sour cream for garnish
  • 1/2 cup salsa for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, combine the cooked shredded chicken, ground cumin, chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well until the chicken is evenly coated with the spices.
  2. Warm the corn tortillas in the microwave for about 20 seconds on a microwave-safe plate, or until they are soft and pliable. This will make them easier to roll without cracking.
  3. Place about 2 tablespoons of the spiced chicken mixture onto each tortilla, slightly off-center. Tightly roll the tortilla around the filling and secure with a toothpick to hold its shape.
  4. In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat until it reaches 350°F. Use a thermometer to ensure the oil is hot enough.
  5. Carefully place 3-4 flautas in the hot oil seam-side down and fry for about 3-4 minutes on each side or until golden and crispy. Use tongs to turn them gently.
  6. Remove the flautas with a slotted spoon and drain them on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  7. Serve the flautas immediately on a platter with shredded lettuce, crumbled queso fresco, sour cream, and salsa on the side for garnish and dipping.
