Ingredients

  • 1 lb (450g) beef sirloin, sliced thinly
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 large tomatoes, diced
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil leaves, chopped
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: 1 tsp red pepper flakes for heat
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar

Instructions

  1. Begin by preparing all the ingredients. Slice the beef thinly, chop the onion, mince the garlic, and dice the tomatoes. Also, chop the basil leaves.
  2. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat (around 375°F). Add the onions and sauté for about 3 minutes until they become translucent.
  3. Add the minced garlic and stir for another 30 seconds, being careful not to let it burn.
  4. Add the sliced beef to the skillet. Cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the beef is browned on all sides. Use tongs to occasionally turn the beef for even cooking.
  5. Stir in the diced tomatoes, soy sauce, and balsamic vinegar. Allow the mixture to simmer for about 10 minutes. The tomatoes should start breaking down into a sauce.
  6. Season with salt, pepper, and optional red pepper flakes to taste. Adjust the seasoning gradually to avoid over-salting.
  7. Finally, stir in the fresh basil and allow the flavors to combine over low heat for 2 minutes. This will brighten the dish and balance flavors.
  8. Remove from heat and serve hot. This dish pairs wonderfully with a side of rice or crusty bread.
