Ingredients

  • 3 pounds beef brisket
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cans (14.5 oz each) diced tomatoes
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 bay leaf

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 325°F (163°C).
  2. Season the beef brisket generously with salt and pepper on all sides.
  3. In a large, ovenproof pot or Dutch oven, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat.
  4. Sear the brisket in the hot oil until browned on all sides, about 4-5 minutes per side. Transfer the brisket to a plate.
  5. In the same pot, add the chopped onion and garlic. Sauté until the onion is translucent, about 5 minutes.
  6. Stir in the diced tomatoes, beef broth, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, paprika, and bay leaf.
  7. Return the brisket to the pot, making sure it is submerged at least halfway in the sauce. If necessary, add a bit more broth or water.
  8. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. Cover with a lid and transfer to the preheated oven.
  9. Cook for 3 to 3.5 hours, or until the brisket is tender and can be easily shredded with a fork. Tip: Check occasionally to ensure there’s enough liquid. Add a little more broth if needed.
  10. Once done, remove the pot from the oven. Let the brisket rest for 15 minutes before slicing against the grain.
  11. Serve the brisket with the tomato sauce spooned over the top. Enjoy with mashed potatoes, rice, or a side of your choice.
