Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar, for dusting

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt. Mix well using a whisk.
  2. In another bowl, mix together the milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Make sure the butter has cooled slightly so it doesn’t cook the other ingredients.
  3. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients. Stir with a spoon until a dough forms. The dough should be soft but not sticky. If it’s too sticky, add a little more flour.
  4. On a lightly floured surface, knead the dough gently for about a minute, then let it rest for 10 minutes to relax the gluten. This step helps in achieving a softer dough.
  5. Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep pan to 350°F (175°C). Use a deep-fry thermometer to maintain the right temperature; too hot can burn the dough, too cool will make it greasy.
  6. Divide the dough into small portions, about the size of a golf ball. Flatten each portion slightly with your hands.
  7. Carefully place dough pieces into the hot oil using tongs. Fry for about 1-2 minutes per side or until golden brown. Do not overcrowd the pan.
  8. Remove the fried dough and place it on paper towels to drain excess oil. Continue frying the rest of the dough.
  9. Once slightly cooled, sprinkle powdered sugar over the fried dough for a sweet finish. Serve warm.
