Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, softened
  • Zest of 1 lemon
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • 1 cup honey
  • Sprinkles, for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, and salt. Stir well using a whisk.
  2. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients. Crack the eggs into the well and add the vanilla extract, softened butter, and lemon zest.
  3. Mix the ingredients together using your hands until a dough forms. If the dough is sticky, add a little more flour, one tablespoon at a time.
  4. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface. Knead it for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic. Cover the dough with a kitchen towel and let it rest for 30 minutes.
  5. Divide the rested dough into four equal parts. Roll each part into a long rope about 1/2 inch in diameter.
  6. Cut each rope into small pieces, about the size of a hazelnut. Roll each piece into a small ball.
  7. Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep frying pan to 350°F. Carefully add a few dough balls at a time to the hot oil. Fry until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes per batch. Use a slotted spoon to remove them and drain on paper towels.
  8. In a saucepan, warm the honey over low heat until it becomes thin and pourable. Add the fried balls and stir gently to coat them evenly in the honey.
  9. Pile the honey-coated balls onto a serving plate. Add sprinkles on top for garnish. Allow to cool before serving.
