Ingredients

  • 1 cup glutinous rice flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1/4 cup sweetened red bean paste or lotus seed paste
  • 1/2 cup white sesame seeds
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of glutinous rice flour with 1/4 cup of granulated sugar. Gradually add 1/3 cup of water while stirring until a dough forms.
  2. Knead the dough for about 3 minutes until it is smooth and pliable. If the dough is too dry, add a little more water, a teaspoon at a time.
  3. Divide the dough into 8 equal portions and roll each portion into a ball.
  4. Flatten each dough ball into a disc, place 1 teaspoon of sweetened red bean paste or lotus seed paste in the center, and carefully pinch the edges together to seal. Roll the filled dough back into a ball shape.
  5. Spread 1/2 cup of white sesame seeds on a flat surface. Roll each filled dough ball in the sesame seeds to coat evenly.
  6. Fill a deep fryer or large pot with vegetable oil, at least 2 inches deep, and heat to 350°F (175°C).
  7. Carefully lower the sesame balls into the hot oil using a slotted spoon, frying them in batches to avoid overcrowding.
  8. Fry the sesame balls for about 6-8 minutes or until golden brown and puffed. Make sure to turn them occasionally for even cooking.
  9. Remove the sesame balls from the oil and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  10. Serve the sesame balls warm. They can also be enjoyed at room temperature.
