Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup Amaretto liqueur
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan or line it with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
  3. In a separate medium bowl, beat the eggs. Stir in the melted butter, buttermilk, Amaretto liqueur, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  4. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring until just combined. Be careful not to overmix, which can make the cake tough.
  5. Stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth. It will be quite thin, but this is okay. Lastly, fold in the chocolate chips.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and gently tap the pan on the counter to remove any air bubbles.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely. This prevents the cake from becoming too moist at the bottom.
  9. For best flavor, let the cake rest for a few hours before serving to allow the flavors to meld beautifully.
  10. Optionally, dust the cake with powdered sugar or serve with whipped cream for an elegant touch.
