Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 3 tablespoons sugar, plus extra for coating
- 1 large egg
- 3/4 cup milk
- 1 tablespoon melted unsalted butter
- Vegetable oil for frying
Instructions
- In a large bowl, whisk together 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 2 teaspoons of baking powder, 1/4 teaspoon of salt, and 3 tablespoons of sugar until well combined.
- In a separate bowl, beat 1 large egg and then mix in 3/4 cup of milk and 1 tablespoon of melted unsalted butter.
- Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring continuously until you have a smooth dough. It should be thick and sticky.
- Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep frying pan to 375°F (190°C). Use a thermometer to monitor the temperature.
- Using a tablespoon or small ice cream scoop, carefully drop spoonfuls of dough into the hot oil, cooking only 4-5 donuts at a time to avoid overcrowding. Tip: Dip the spoon in oil before scooping to prevent sticking.
- Fry the doughnuts for about 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown. Use a slotted spoon to turn them gently.
- Remove the donuts from the oil and place them on a wire rack with a paper towel underneath to absorb excess oil.
- While still warm, roll the donuts in additional sugar to coat them evenly. Be generous for that perfect sweet crust.
- Allow the donuts to cool slightly before serving. They are best enjoyed warm and fresh.
