Ingredients

  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons (25g) granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 3 tablespoons (45g) unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) milk
  • 1 tablespoon (15ml) orange blossom water or vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, melted butter, milk, and orange blossom water (or vanilla extract).
  3. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until a dough forms. Knead the dough for about 5 minutes until smooth. Cover and let rest for 30 minutes.
  4. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to about 1/8 inch (3mm) thickness. Cut into strips or diamond shapes using a knife or pastry cutter.
  5. Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or heavy pot to 350°F (175°C). Fry the dough pieces in batches, turning occasionally, until golden brown (about 2 minutes per side).
  6. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  7. Dust generously with powdered sugar before serving. Enjoy warm!
  8. Tip: For extra flavor, you can add a pinch of grated orange or lemon zest to the dough.
