Ingredients

  • 1 cup of cabbage, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup of carrots, grated
  • 1/4 cup of shiitake mushrooms, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup of spring onions, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon of soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon of sesame oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon of ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 24 round dumpling wrappers
  • Water for sealing the dumplings

Instructions

  1. Start by preparing your vegetables. Finely chop the cabbage, mushrooms, and spring onions; grate the carrots; and mince the garlic.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the chopped cabbage, carrots, mushrooms, spring onions, and garlic.
  3. Add soy sauce, sesame oil, salt, and black pepper to the vegetable mixture. Stir well to combine. Taste to adjust the seasoning if necessary.
  4. Prepare your workspace by laying out the dumpling wrappers on a clean, dry surface. Have a small bowl of water ready.
  5. Place a teaspoon of the vegetable filling in the center of a dumpling wrapper. Avoid overfilling to prevent the dumplings from bursting during steaming.
  6. Dip your finger in water and run it along the edge of the dumpling wrapper. Fold the wrapper over the filling to create a half moon shape. Press the edges together firmly to seal.
  7. Repeat the process with the remaining wrappers and filling.
  8. Arrange the dumplings in a single layer in a bamboo steamer lined with parchment paper or cabbage leaves to prevent sticking. Ensure they are not touching to allow even cooking.
  9. Fill a large pot with a few inches of water and bring it to a boil. Place the bamboo steamer on top, ensuring it is not submerged in the water.
  10. Steam the dumplings over medium-high heat for about 15-20 minutes, or until the dumpling wrappers are translucent and the filling is heated through. Tip: Avoid opening the steamer too often as this will release the steam and slow down cooking.
  11. Serve the dumplings hot with soy sauce or your favorite dipping sauce.
