Huaraches
Huaraches are a traditional Mexican dish made from masa dough and topped with beans, meat, cheese, and salsa. They’re named for their resemblance to the sole of a sandal.

Ingredients
- 2 cups masa harina
- 1 1/4 cups warm water
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup refried beans
- 1 cup cooked shredded beef or chicken
- 1/2 cup crumbled queso fresco
- 1/4 cup chopped cilantro
- 1/2 cup shredded lettuce
- 1/4 cup diced tomatoes
- 1/2 cup sliced avocado
- 1/4 cup salsa
- 2 tablespoons cooking oil
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix the masa harina, warm water, and salt until a soft dough forms. Knead it for a couple of minutes until smooth and pliable. If the dough feels too dry, add small amounts of water, as needed.
- Divide the dough into 4 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball, then press and shape into an oval about 6 inches long and 1/4 inch thick. You can use a tortilla press or your hands. If using hands, lay the dough between two sheets of plastic wrap to prevent sticking.
- Heat a nonstick skillet or griddle over medium heat and add 1 tablespoon of cooking oil. Once hot, cook the huarache for about 2 minutes on each side until slightly browned and cooked through.
- Top each masa base with a thin layer of refried beans, spreading it evenly with the back of a spoon.
- Evenly distribute the shredded beef or chicken over the refried beans on each huarache.
- Sprinkle each huarache with crumbled queso fresco, chopped cilantro, shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, and sliced avocado.
- Drizzle with salsa and serve warm. Enjoy your homemade huaraches!
- Tip: Keep the prepared huaraches warm in a 200°F oven while you cook the rest.
- Tip: To prevent cracking, ensure the masa dough is well-hydrated.
