Ingredients

  • 8 small mantou (Chinese steamed buns)
  • 1 cup vegetable oil, for frying
  • 1/4 cup sweetened condensed milk, for dipping (optional)

Instructions

  1. Start by carefully slicing the mantou in half horizontally. If they’re frozen, allow them to thaw at room temperature for about 10 minutes.
  2. In a deep, heavy-bottomed pan, pour in the vegetable oil. The oil should be about 1 inch deep. Heat the oil over medium heat to 350°F. Tip: Use a kitchen thermometer to ensure the oil reaches the right temperature.
  3. Once the oil is hot, gently place the mantou halves into the oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Fry them in batches if needed.
  4. Fry the mantou for about 2-3 minutes on each side or until they turn a nice golden brown. Use a slotted spoon to carefully flip them.
  5. Remove the fried mantou from the oil and drain them on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil.
  6. Serve the fried mantou warm, optionally with a side of sweetened condensed milk for dipping.
